The Ashanti Region lies in the southern half and is centrally located in the middle belt of Ghana. It lies between longitudes 0.15W and 2.25W, and latitudes 5.50N and 7.46N occupying a total land surface of 24,389 km2 (9,417 sq mi) or 10.2 percent of the total land area of Ghana. The region shares boundaries with six of the sixteen (16) political regions, Bono Region, Bono East Region in the north, Eastern Region in the east, Central Region in the south, Western North Region in the south-west and Ahafo Region in the west.

Brief History

The Asante (Ashantis) constitute the largest of the various subgroups of the Akan, who trace their origins partly to Bono-Manso and Techiman, in present-day Bono Region. They constitute 14.8 per cent of all Ghanaians by birth, and 30.1 per cent of the total Akan population of 8,562,748 in the country.  Various oral traditions have it that the Ashantis migrated from various places through Bono-Manso/Takyiman (Techiman) to present day Ashanti Region.

Ashanti Region is the second most heavily populated region in Ghana with census 24,389 km² Area 223.1/km² population density. The population of the Ashanti Region according to 2021 Population and Housing Census stands at 5,440,463 with 2,679,914 male and 2,760,549 female.
