The Ekumfi District is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the twenty two (22) of MMDAs in the Cental Region.

Ekumfi District was established by a Legislative Instrument L.I. 2170 and was inaugurated in June, 2012 with Essarkyir as its capital, it is located along the Atlantic Coastline of the Central Region of Ghana.

It occupies a total land area of 276.65 square kilometres or 0.12 percent of Ghana’s land area, making it the fifth smallest among the twenty two districts in the Central Region.

The Ekumfi District is bounded to the west by the Mfantsiman Municipality, to the north by the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District, to the east by the Gomoa West District and to the south by the Gulf of Guinea.

The population of the District according to 2021 population and housing census stands at 56,741   with 26,384 males and 30,357 females.
