Nabdam District was created as an Assembly by legislative Instrument (L.I. 2105) in 2012 with its Administrative capital as NangodiThe Nabdam District is located in the Upper East Region of Ghana forms part of the fifteen (15) Municipalities and Districts in the Region. 

It was carved from Talensi-Nabdam and forms part of the new 46 districts and municipalities created in the year 2012 and were inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on the 28th June, 2012.

It is bordered to the North by the Bongo District, South by the Talensi District, to the East by the Bawku West District and to the West the Bolgatanga Municipality.

The District lies between latitudes 10
47° and 10057° North and Longitudes 0031° and 1015° west. It has a total land area of 244.94km2.

The population of the District according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 33,826 with 16,871 males and 16,955 females.
