The Bole District is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 7 Municipalities and Districts in the Savannah Region with the administrative capital as Bole.

The Bole district was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I) 1786 and is located at the extreme western part of the Northern region and is situated between latitudes 8’10.5 and 09’ and longitude 1.50E’ and 2.45 W. The Bole District covers an area of about 4800 square km; out of the area of 70,384sq km of the Northern region.

Other major towns include Bamboi, Maluwe, Tinga, Tasilma, Mandari and Banda/Nkwanta. For the percentage land take of District and the Northern Region in relation to Ghana (6,239sq km), they are 2.0% and 29.6% respectively. This means that the land take of the district is 6.8% of the total land mass of the Northern Region.

It is bordered to the north by the Sawla Tuna Kalba District, to the west by the Republic of Cote D’ivoire with the Black Volta as the boundary.

The population rate is about 3.6% per annum. The population is sparse with a density of about 14 per a km. The population of the district according to 2021 population and housing census stands at 115,800 with 59,903 males and 55,897
 females.
