Speaking at the meeting, the Women Caucus representatives of the The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Hajia Mariam Iddrisu says, there's the need to encourage and support women to participate in decision making processes in public life.

According to the 2010 population and Housing Census, women represent 51.2% of the National Population. in spite of the fact that women constitute a majority of Ghana’s population making representation in decision making positions is far below expectation.

The low representation of women in politics is more glaring at the Local Government level where women represent 7.3% (694 out of 9,505) of Elected and appointed assembly members in Ghana. Also, out of the 260 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Excutives (MMDCEs) in Ghana, only 40 are women representing only 15 percent.

This demonstrates the need for women who are currently in the assemblies as either elected or appointed members to have a strong front that can give them opportunities like capacity building, networking, mentoring, coaching, media engagement.

She therefore, called on local and International NGOs working in the interest of Women empowerment and women participation in politictics and Governance to partner with NALAG for effective local governance.
