Referendum: Vote ‘Yes’ says Wenchi MCE at Apoo Festival in Nwoase
Municipal Chief Executive of Wenchi, Dr. Prince Kwakye Afriyie has stated unreservedly, the need for all electorates in the Wenchi constituency to Vote YES to amend article 55 clause 3 of the 1992 constitution to pave way for political parties to participate in District Level Elections.

He made this known when he joined the chiefs and people of Nwoase community in the Wenchi Municipality to climax their annual Apoo Festival celebration.

The program had often served as a homecoming season for the people of the area as they mostly trouped from all places to celebrate this day.

In his speech he delivered at the celebration, Dr. Kwakye Afriyie noted that the amendment of the constitution will pave way for political parties to openly campaign and support candidates of their choice in subsequent elections to come.

He said district assembly elections as it stood now was non-partisan but there were traces of party elements in it.

The irate M C E further stated that if party traits were been seen then “why don’t we change the status quo that prevented the politician from being part to now fully participate to enhance our local governance.

He added that Ghana has been ranked as one of the best countries on the African soil due to the multi-party democracy we have practiced since 1992, which in his estimation has enabled the country to calve a good niche for itself.

He said before these reforms could be made, a total of at least 40% of registered Ghanaian voters needed to vote and out of this number at least 75% of the 40% voting needed to vote YES to accept the decision to amend the provision as stated in the clause.

He stated that when the electorates vote yes it will take away the winner takes all syndrome from our local governance system and all political parties could actively contribute to promoting development.

He added that this could create a platform for divergent opinions from the different political divides to make useful contributions which will inure to the benefit of its citizenry.

Dr. Kwakye Afriyie further stated that in as much as democracy would be deepened at the local government level, a YES vote would ensure that political parties mandatorily include marginalized persons for representation in the Assembly’s.

He, therefore, appealed to nananom, opinion leaders, the clergy and the civil society groups to all rally round the campaign and support the YES vote agenda to enable political parties to come on board to promote development at the local level.

The program brought together chiefs, traditional leaders and priests, politicians and other people who owed allegiance to the gods (Kwaku Fri) from across the length and breathe of the country.

The program which has been annual for the past decades by the Nwoase Traditional Priest Nana Kofi Drobo IV, is used to cleanse their stools and also offer sacrifices to their gods.

Amongst the famous personalities who thronged the place for the celebration was Nana Kwaku Bonsam the Traditional priest of Afrancho traditional area of the Ashanti region.
