Meet the Citizens Assembly organized for JHS

NaDef Scholarship beneficiaries and Associates (NASBA) and Asutifi North Youth Parliament have organized a primus Meet the Citizens Assembly for Junior High Schools under their Children and Youth Manifesto Project.

It was organized with support from Ghana Education Service (GES) for nine basic schools within Asutifi North District.

The event which was under the theme, "An Assembly Member; My community, My vision" tasked representatives of competing schools to provide solutions to problems relating to Sustainability 4E Pillars- Environment, Education, Employment and Economic Development for youth.

At the end of the contest, God's Will Preparatory School represented by Vincent Karikari emerged winner with 106 points out of 150 while D/A Girls Model School represented by Dorothy Owusu had 101 points and Paradise International School represented by Kwaku Nankebeth had 99 points placed second and third respectively.

Competing schools included Asutifi Educational Complex, God's Will Preparatory School, D.A Girls School, Barima Tweneboah Ampem JHS, Osei Kofi Abiri Basic School, Asutifi Future Glory International, Ntotroso Methodist, Paradise International School, and St. Lawrence School.

All 10 winners will be trained on Mobile App development and coding. The winner, together with the first runner up will be sponsored with air tickets to travel from Kumasi to Accra for a Youth Conference and meet MPs from Ahafo at the Parliament House. They will also serve as children parliamentarians at the Asutifi North Youth Parliament. The school which produced the overall winner will receive an Internet Broadband for their ICT center while the coaches of the winner and first runner up will join the winners on the trip to Accra.

Technical Assistant and Project Chairman for Asutifi North District National Youth Authority, Mr. Emmanuel Marfo in his opening address explained that the event seeks to create awareness among aspiring Assembly members on issues affecting the youth in the locality and the entire District.

Deputy Director for Asutifi North District Assembly, Mr Tweneboah Koduah speaking at the event stressed that such an event is of great importance for the Assembly and heaped praises on the organizers of the program for the step taken.

"All aspiring Assembly members present here today must listen and adopt all important issues that would be addressed by these contestants.

They are the children in our electoral areas and their voices matter", he added.

Nana Agyemang, Adontenhene of Kenyasi No. 1 Traditional council and Chairman of the event advised the contestants and pupils present to take advantage of competitions like this to build public speaking skills.

Nana Agyemang also thanked and tasked the organizers to provide more such platforms for pupils.

"We need more of such healthy competitions to help hone the skills of our kids", he added.

NASBA and the Asutifi North Youth Parliament plan to develop joint-action programs with in-coming Assembly members for 2020 and beyond.
