AMANSIE W: GES urged to allocate time for menstrual health and sex education for teenagers

The Ghana Education Service has been urged to allocate time on the educational curriculum for menstrual health and sex education in the schools to help eliminate teenage pregnancy among the students.

According to the President of Primad Organization, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) based in the Ashanti Region, Mrs. Priscilla Asamoah Baffour, this offer will allow the students to acquire the necessary knowledge needed to manage themselves when the need arises.

Mrs. Asamoah Baffour made these observation during her visit to Manso Abodom LA Junior High School to help sensitize the school children on menstrual health and sex education and also distribute sanitary pads to the school girls to help manage their menstruation at Abodom in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region.

"My advice to parents is to train, educate, nurture and mentor their children into knowing and understanding their bodies, the changes that comes with it and the necessary precautions to take to avoid sexual intercourse which leads to teenage pregnancy" she said.

She further added that "the educational fraternity must do their best to give free slot every Friday for the female teachers to use at least 30 minutes of their time to teach these young girls more about menstrual health, sex education to mention but few and also support NGOs like us who are willing to do more to cause change and impact lives".

The event provided the opportunity for the students to interact with the key and most influential delegations from Primad Organization, while free sanitary pads were presented to the students for menstrual hygiene.

The President of the organisation opined that the motive behind this exercise is to eradicate teenage pregnancy and also promote menstrual health and personal hygiene in rural communities indicating that the provision of menstrual pad is to ensure healthy menstruation and the fight against the use of rags by girls in rural area.

The Primad Organisation which is aimed at achieving healthy living in rural communities, young girls been educated on their menstruation and providing proper hygienic measures, to educate them on premarital sex so that the knowledge acquired can help eradicate teenage pregnancy and the free supply of sanitary pads to help prevent the use of rags and ensuring safe and comfortable menstruation has visited Sakora Wonoo SDA school, Toafoam D/A school , Nyameani Methodist and D/A schools, Nkwanta JHS, Eduadin JHS distributing over 2000 sanitry pads to the female students these school.

Mrs. Priscilla Asamoah Baffour assured her office will continue this activity saying "our office will continue in this manner and will even establish sanitary pads bank in every rural community for free supply for the young girls and mentor many young girls to become great future leaders"

She then appealed to individuals and organizations to help them reach far in their projects.

"We need support in buying the sanitary pads and cotton underwears for the young girls since they are very expensive. We need screening kits especially hepatitis B since we screen them too to make sure they are healthy and safe" Mrs. Priscilla Asamoah Baffour explained.
