Govt ready to support Ghana Red Cross housing project – Minister

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Stephen Yakubu has pledged Government’s support to the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) to construct 1,000 houses for homeless flood survivors in the region.

He described a forum dubbed “Humanitarian Forum” to raise GHc 41,000,000.00 for the construction of the housing project for the homeless flood victims in the Region as a brilliant approach to support the efforts of the government.

The Regional Minister welcomed the initiative by the GRCS, and called on companies, financial institutions and private individuals to support the initiative to a successful end.

The Minister said this when he joined the traditional authorities, Civil Society Organizations including TEERE, a Non-Government Organization in the Region at a fundraising event in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital.

He advised the GRCS to put up simple but solid structures so that the idea could be reproduced by local artisans across the region. Madam Doris Sheer, the Officer in charge of Senior Experten Service based in Germany Bonn, who works with the GRCS to achieve its target, urged Ghanaians to help them provide comfortable homes for the flood victims.

Mr. Paul Pidimniba Wooma, the Regional Manager of the GRCS said some families and individuals in flood prone areas in some Districts lost their houses and other valuables to flood waters and needed to be supported.

He said even though the GRCS had provided 101 houses to the victims, they were inadequate, and therefore, the need to add up to complete the number. Mr. Wooma appealed to philanthropists within and outside the country to show compassion to affected flood victims in the Region.
