GOMOA W: Operation 1 million coconut trees takes off

Distribution of coconut seedlings to farmers in line with attaining one million coconut trees in the district has begun in the Gomoa West District in the Central region.

The District earlier lunched the program this year to make Gomoa West the preferred market for coconut in the coming years.

The District Chief Executive, (DCE) Mr Bismark Baisie Nkum followed up with registration of interested farmers and subsequently organised training to equip these farmers with the knowledge required for effective delivery of the project.

The DCE noted that coconut is a tree of life and he intends to revive the local economy through coconut plantation. “There is money in this business than cocoa”, he said.

In order to reduce cost, the DCE indicated that the Assembly would soon establish its own nursery to produce 100,000 seedlings yearly.

The first batch of farmers who received their seedlings were grateful for the initiative.

The DCE in his response, said, “This move is in conformity with the President's initiative on Planting for food and jobs as well as planting for food and investment’’.

According to Mr Nkum, the Assembly is working out an off taker arrangement to ease the burden of farmers when the coconut is ready for harvest.

The DCE, Bismark Baisie Nkum advised the young graduates (SHS, University etc) to take advantage of the program. His major focus is to enable the district produce for export and domestic consumption while targeting a multipurpose factory in the long run to produce coconut juice, coconut oil, organic hair products, sugar etc.
