Otoase Water Utility Project to provide potable water for households at Ayensuano

The Vice President and CEO of Industry of Grundfos, Mr. Stephane Simonitta and his team have inspected the Otoase Water Utility Project located in the Ayensuano District of Eastern region.

The primary focus of the project is to bring safe and clean water to 40 per cent of people living in rural and peri-urban areas of Ghana. Ayensuano, a predominantly farming community, has a population of about 4,000.

The Otoase Water Utility Project was established in 2022 as a greenfield water utility. Prior to the project, untreated water was the only option for the people, and even that was distant from their households. The system’s capacity provides 35m3 of drinking water a day to municipal water and bottling plant.

The bottling system produces 400 bottles a day in 20 liter recyclable jars sold in Accra and surrounding communities. They provide water to the community through home connections and AQTaps which is a smart dispenser.

The utility plan has two boreholes run by the Grundfos SQFlex pump, water treatment and storage, 3 AQ Taps and more than 6 km of municipal pipe infrastructure.

Some of the beneficiaries said they are happy for the water project and looking for water from long distances is now a thing of the past. They said they hope the project will be extended to other communities.

According to Mr. Francis Taylor, the Technical Manager, they are confident in achieving their objectives.

He said Grundfos is a Danish company with 83 subsidiaries worldwide and they are actively providing water solutions in Ghana for years. He reiterated that they are working with the telecommunication centers for a reliable payment system for constant supply of water to ease their stress.

The Ghana Water Initiative (GWI) which is a project by SafeWater, a strategic business unit within Grundfos, seeks to reach one million people in underserved communities in Ghana by 2026 with clean drinking water that is easily accessible, reliable, sustainable and efficiently run.
