This followed the completion of a two-storey classroom block at the Presbyterian Basic School in Tema Manhean to accommodate the excess batch of students in the shift system.

A total of 600 dual desks were also presented to the Presbyterian ‘A’ and ‘B’ and two other schools namely Tema Manhean Anglican and Community-8 No. 4 basic schools to contain the students.

Presenting the furniture to the Metropolitan Director of Education for distribution to the schools, Chief Executive of Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), Yohane Nii Armah Ashitey stated that the move had finally brought the long awaited end to the shift system.

Mr. Ashitey said the gesture formed part of efforts by the Assembly to transform education through provision of logistics and other teaching and learning materials to the Directorate.

He was hopeful that the gesture would help change the face of education in the metropolis and translate into improved academic performance of the students.

He indicated that abolishing the shift system would increase the contact hours of the children to learn as they would no longer be hasty to vacate the classrooms for another session.

The MCE further said providing educational infrastructure would help improve academic work in the metropolis and that the Assembly would not relent on its efforts to continue to invest in all areas of education.

The Metropolitan Director of Education, Mrs. Bernice Ofori who received the desks, expressed gratitude for the continuous support by the Assembly to improve teaching and learning in the metropolis.

She said the gesture would increase enrollment and offer the children the needed comfortable and conducive environment to study and thereby, improve in Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and by extension, the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
