The DCE made the disclosure after the district was ranked 2nd most dignified city in the 2019 sanitation awards.

He noted that the District opted for bio-digester toilets since it can also help produce fuel (gas) for use at the kitchen to cook at these institutions.

The bio-digester toilets, according to the DCE, will not only help cut cost of LPG in these schools but will also help manage liquid waste in the institutions.

He added that as part of the district’s strategies in managing liquid waste issues, the district will intensify the campaigns on the need for safe sanitation practices in the household as well as public places in the District.

The Most Dignified City awards is a sanitation competition project among all the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to design and implement state-of-the-art strategies in solving liquid waste issues in their various areas.

The project, which was organized by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR), was funded by UKAID and supported by IMC worldwide and IRC Ghana.

The Dignified City Award, which is a three-year award process and in stages, collated proposals of about 128 MMDA’s out of which 48 were selected to compete in stage 2.

15 MMDAs made it to the final stage. Kwahu East District placed 2nd after Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) emerged the ultimate winner.

Kwahu East District received a cash prize of £150,000 for placing 2nd in the competition. The cash prize is to be used to embark on sanitation related issues in the District.

“I can say that due to this project, sanitation in the Kwahu East District has increased to about 70% which is really impressive… and now after this award the District will intensify programs and activities geared towards sanitation in the District. We will continue to support households and institutions to make issue of sanitation a thing of the past in Kwahu East”, he added.
