AMA begins distribution of free waste bins

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited under the One Household One Waste bin has begun the distribution of free waste bins to households in Korle Gonno a suburb of the Ablekuma South Sub Metropolitan District Council.

The initiative forms part of an ongoing exercise to register households and provide free receptacles to store waste to keep the city clean.

Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah Head of Public Affairs at the AMA noted that it is mandatory under the AMA's 2017 Sanitation Byelaws for every household to provide a receptacle for the storage of solid waste in their premises adding that the distribution of the bins would ensure an effective solid waste collection in the city.

He added that due to the withdrawal of the communal container service mostly provided in lower-middle-income communities it had become necessary to give out the waste bins to encourage house to house collection in the city.

Mr. Ankrah then urged households to take advantage of the ongoing distribution to acquire standard receptacles to store solid waste and use the waste bins for its intended purpose.
