Atebubu Assembly moves to reduce disaster

The National Disaster Management Organization NADMO under the auspices of the Atebubu-Amantin municipal assembly has met stakeholders to deliberate on strategies to reduce the spate of disasters in the municipality.

Welcoming participants to the meeting, the municipal chief executive Hon. Edward Owusu said it has become very important to curb the spate of disasters in the municipality citing the most recent one a rainstorm that hit the Akokoa community affecting about 50 houses.

He added that resources for the support of such victims from either the assembly or NADMO are fast dwindling hence the need to seek preventive measures to forestall any hardships to people in the municipality.

The municipal head of NADMO Mr. Musah Shaibu said the activities of chainsaw operators have become worrying as some of them cut trees around water bodies.

He urged officials of the Town and Country Planning Department to strictly adhere to regulations when it comes to land demarcation and building to forestall unplanned developments.

The farm manager of the Amantin Agro-Processing Company Limited located near Akokoa, Mr. Williams Kwaku Boateng attributed the problem to illegal tree cutting and haphazard buildings in the area.

He took the meeting through some afforestation initiatives embarked on by his outfit adding that about 5000 seedlings are currently in line to be planted to boost the forest cover of the area.

Various contributors identified charcoal burning, haphazard development of communities, the use of sub-standard material for wiring buildings, and the disregard for building standards as some of the causes of disasters.

The meeting suggested the use of existing volunteer squads to check environmentally degrading practices in various communities and the establishment of community plantations to help reduce disasters.

The head of the Town and Country Planning Department Mr. Anthony Mensah said the development task force of the assembly will not only continue with its educational activities but enforce existing regulations to ensure safety for all.

Present was the municipal coordinating director Hajia Fati Saaka and representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Atebubu and Amantin traditional councils.

Others were the Ghana National Fire Service, the forest services, and wildlife divisions of the Forestry Commission, the media, and the Information Services Department.
