The directive asked the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to clean their surroundings in line with the celebration of the impending 57th Independence Day celebration.

The exercise was carried out through the principal street of Zabzugu, the local market and ended at the refuse dump site.

Addressing residents after the exercise, Mr Issifu Alidu Laa-Bandow, District Chief Executive, said the municipality would carry out the exercise on regular basis, to provide an opportunity for the residents to ensure a clean environment.

He said mosquitoes breed in stagnant and filthy waters, and government spends a lot of money to treat water borne diseases like malaria.

Mr Laa-Bandow appealed to residents to keep their surroundings clean to help promote personal hygiene and development.

Mr Mohammed Yahaya, Head of the District Environmental Health Unit, noted that the exercise would help the area to promote environmental hygiene, which would ensure good health among the people.
