ASUTIFI N: Minerals Development Fund inaugurates Local Management Committee
The Minerals Development Fund (MDF) has inaugurated the Asutifi North Local Management Committee (LMC) for its Mining Community Development Scheme (MCDS).

The mining Community Development scheme was established in 2016 to facilitate the socioeconomic development of communities in which mining activities are undertaken and that are affected by mining operations.

The committee which is to be chaired by Omanhene of Kenyasi No.1, Nana Osei Kofi Abiri have Omanhene of Kenyasi No. 2, Odeneho Dadiako Kwabena Nsiah Ababio and Omanhene of Ntotroso, Barima Twereku Ampem III as members.



Other members include District Chief Executive officer of Asutifi North, Anthony Adjei Mensah, Representative of Minerals Commission, Mr Ernest Okyere, Representative of Newmont Goldcorp Gh, Mrs. Charlotte Fafa Tei Senyo, Representative of Women's group in the district, Madam Comfort Adjei Mensah and Representative of youth groups in the district, Mr. Emmanuel Duah.

Chairman of the committee, Nana Osei Kofi Abiri pledged that he, together with his committee will work to create opportunities for the youth in the district.

"This committee will work together with all stakeholders to resolve issues like the growing menace of youth unemployment and galamsey", he added.



Chief Executive officer of Newmont GoldCorp Ahafo Mines, Mr. Yaw Okyere reiterated his company's readiness to work hand in hand with the committee to facilitate development in the district as it has already been doing through the establishment of Newmont Ahafo Development Fund (Nadef).

Advisor to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Benjamin Aryee speaking on behalf of Hon. Opoku Asomah Kyeremeh expressed that the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo expects the fund to be managed effectively to ensure the transformation of mining communities from their current sorry states to developed ones.



"The ministry will expect accountability from this committee through the MDF Board and will institute a scheme to award best local committees and stakeholders that contributes to ensuring the vision is achieved", he added.

The chairperson of the Minerals Development Fund, Madam Esther H. Edjeani presented a cheque of one million cedis as seed money to the committee and tasked it to use the fund judiciously and ensure real dividends are yielded in the long-term.
