The District Education Oversight Committee(DEOC) in conjunction with various stakeholders of education in the Kassena Nanknana West district has developed a tracking system to aid purge the sector and curtail teacher absenteeism in schools.

Interacting with Ghanadistricts.com to highlight this new standard introduced, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Assembly, George Nonterah said this was a simple format which entails the name of a particular school, the month, number of working days in that month, the name of the teacher, days present, days absent with permission and days absent without permission.

According to him, the system which will be effective from June would be implemented in all various schools within the district.

He claimed this would be submitted to the District Directorate every first week of the ensuing month for monitoring and teachers that may faulter in this regard will subsequently receive the appropriate sanctions thereof.

Teacher absenteeism is identified as a major cause to the low standard of education in schools, especially in the remote areas where monitoring and supervision is terribly low.

However in line with the Ministry of Education’s zero tolerance for teachers absenteeism, the DCE has implored headteachers to tighten up their monitoring and supervisory roles in their respective schools to help improve generally the problem of teacher absenteeism.
