A school complex and teachers’ quarters have been inaugurated for the people of Vodza in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region.

Funded by members of the community and the GETFund at the cost of GH¢520,000, the new 12-unit school complex replaced the one established in 1927 by the Catholic  missionaries.

Contribution

The people of the community provided the land for the construction, which started in 2011 and also funded the construction of a fence wall round the school.

The new school complex has an infirmary, a computer laboratory and a library and it is currently going to accommodate 363 students made up of 203 girls and 160 boys.

The clinic would also serve the health needs of the community.

Teachers
The Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Charles Aheto-Tsegah, said at the ceremony to open the school facilities that the GES would provide the school with qualified teachers and adequate learning materials to make teaching and learning effective.

“This beautiful edifice is for the people of Vodza, a fruit of your sweat and labour,” he said.

He asked the people to make the school a learning centre of excellence and a supportive place for the teachers, adding that the building and its facilities should encourage the pupil to take their studies seriously.

Mr Aheto-Tsegah called on the community to help ensure strict discipline and also expose wrongful acts by teachers such as drunkenness, lateness, absenteeism, laziness and wasting of instructional time.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Sylvester Tornyeava, called on parents to make good use of the edifice to bring development and growth to the area.
