The Offinso North District Assembly has vowed to act firmly to control small-scale mining operations in the area to protect the environment.

This comes in the wake of the discovery of large gold deposits at Nkwakwa, one of its communities.

Mr Samuel Kojo Appiah-Kubi, the District Chief Executive, said everything would be done to ensure that environmental safety standards were maintained.

He said the mass pollution of water bodies and massive degradation of farmlands seen elsewhere in the country would never be allowed in the area.

He was addressing an ordinary meeting of the assembly held at Akomadan.

Mr Appiah-Kubi appealed to the chiefs, landowners and the general population to show good understanding and to cooperate with state institutions to promote effective management of the resource.

He urged the people to take advantage of the Rural Enterprises Project (REP) to acquire vocational and technical skills to improve their livelihood.

Mr Appiah-Kubi said it was refreshing that 33 women last year established their own businesses through the support of project.

He said the Assembly was working closely with the Business Advisory Centre (BAC) of the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) on the setting up of a revolving fund to provide some financial assistance to farmers.

This, he said, was part of efforts at helping to boost agricultural production in the area.
