BONGO: Potable water to be extended to more communities

More than 10 communities in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region of Ghana will from December, 2014 start enjoying potable treated water under the Small Town Water Supply System (STWSS) project. These will include communities in and around Zorkor and Bongo-Soe.

More than 10 communities in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region of Ghana will from December, 2014 start enjoying potable treated water under the Small Town Water Supply System (STWSS) project. These will include communities in and around Zorkor and Bongo-Soe.

This was revealed at a fund raising event held at the Zorkor market square in aid of the Zorkor STWSS under the theme “water; our life, our concern”.

Bongo District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Ayamdor Alexis Adugdaa in an address to the chiefs, their elders, assembly members and community members of Zorkor said the GH¢1,793,643.79 project was awarded to two contractors; Nani Development Ass. Ltd and M/S Blessedfield Limited on February 17, 2014 and scheduled to be completed within eight months.

The other STWS project also under construction in Bongo-Soe is pegged at GH¢900,000.00.

Hon. Adugdaa explained that under the project, Water and Sanitation Management Teams (WSMT) were formed on 4th February, 2014 and orientation given to enable them know and understand their basic roles cum responsibilities and to start performing these functions at each stage of the implementation. These WSMT will operate and manage the new water facility on behalf of the District Assembly upon its completion.

He disclosed that two persons, an electrician and a plumber, had been employed and were under the tutelage of the contractors. He asked the chiefs and people to show appreciation to the President John Mahama administration stressing that, it was his desire to ensure that every community got its own source of clean and hygienic drinking water.

The DCE donated GH¢1,000.00 to the fund raising committee to support the work of the WSMT in ensuring that water under the project was pumped and discharged at appropriate delivery points across the beneficiary communities.

Earlier in a welcome address, Chairman of the Zorkor STWSS, Mr. Samuel Alaara disclosed that four communities, including Gambrongo, Kanga and Atiabisi-Torongo were the first batch of communities to benefit from the new water supply system. He said the WSMT had plans to further extend potable water supply to nearby communities such as Nyariga, Vea and Balungu.

Mr. Alaara thanked government for allocating the water supply project to Zorkor and also commended the Bongo DCE for procuring land for the construction of the water and sanitation management team’s office. He called on all to support both in cash and in kind to further enhance the performance of the team.

He explained that the fund raising activity was a necessary first step to prepare the minds of the communities’ people that it was their responsibility to ensure the effective running and maintenance of the new water system upon its completion.

Madam Paulina Adongo, a housewife in an interview noted that the STWSS would spare women and especially school girls the treacherous and tiresome search for potable water for their daily household chores.
