Stakeholders in Education in the Talensi District held education forum to deliberate on strategies to making the best out of the available resources to improving standard of education in the district.

The forum was also used to assess impacts of interventions so far made since the public uproar about falling educational standards especially in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The forum brought together the District Chief Executive for the Talensi, District and Regional Education Directorates of Education, all heads of basic schools, circuit supervisors,  core staff at the education directorate, district assembly , Development partners including Afrikis and Link Community Development.

Addressing participants at the forum, District Chief Executive for Talensi, Edward Awunnore indicated that a lot has been invested in various aspects of the education sector including; infrastructure provision, supply of dual and mono desks, support for teacher trainees, extension of electricity to schools, and construction of sanitary facilities in a number of schools all with a common goal of improving access and providing quality education to raise standard of education in the district.

He described as unacceptable that instead of making progress because of the interventions, the district’s performance rather dropped in 2013 having placed first in the region 2 years ago.  

Looking forward, the assembly has instituted the following measures:
1-    A District Disciplinary Committee has been set up to deal with any indisciplinary action by teachers
2-    Regular unannounced visits to school to check teacher absenteeism, and judicious use of instructional hours
3-    Camping of third year students due for BECE for special tuition by team of examiners
4-    Procurement of more desks by the assembly for distribution to schools
5-    Implementation of phase II of teacher motivation.

This and many others measures are the sure bets of making inroads in their quest to being one of the best performing districts in the country. And the DCE is confident the 2014 BECE result will come out far better than previous year.
