MADINA: Municipality undertakes clean-up

The La-Nkwantanang-Madina Environmental Health and Management Unit of the Municipal Assembly, on Saturday, organized a six-hour clean-up exercise within the municipality, desilting all gutters lined up along the main Madina, the Central Markets towards the Social Welfare.

The La-Nkwantanang-Madina Environmental Health and Management Unit of the Municipal Assembly, on Saturday, organized a six-hour clean-up exercise within the municipality, desilting all gutters lined up along the main Madina, the Central Markets towards the Social Welfare.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the exercise, the Head of the Environmental Health and Management Unit Mr. Joseph Quacoe, said the Municipal Assembly a day before the clean-up exercise was embarked upon, and ordered all traders and market women not to open their shops which majority of them complied with.

The massive clean-up exercise involved the entire staff of the La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) , Mr. Franklin Anku.

The Zoomlion, the local voluntary youth groups, Corn Millers Association and the staff of NADMO also took part of the exercise.

About 100 Junior High School pupils drawn from the various schools within the municipality also kept the entire Madina Number One School Complex clean, by sweeping the entire compound, and removing a huge heap of rubbish that had piled up for almost one year.

When GNA visited the entire areas under the exercise, the staff of the LaNMMA and other traders/market women with broom sticks, wheelbarrows and shovels were busily removing dirt accumulated in the gutters. The LaNMMA rubbish trucks were also carting the accumulated heaps of rubbish on the road sides for disposal.

The MCE, Mr. Anku and Alhaji Saaka Dramani the Municipal Co-ordinating Director LaNMMA, presented food and water to the Junior High School pupils who began the clean up exercise around 6.00a.m. The MCE reminded the pupils to try to be leaders and advocates of general cleanliness within the environment they lived .

The Head of the Environmental Health and Management Unit, Mr. Joseph Quacoe in an interview with GNA said aside this massive clean up exercise, they have been organizing monthly exercises, and the impending 57th Independence Anniversary Celebration necessitated the massive exercise.
