The Government of Japan has signed two grant agreements with Renaddo Foundation, a Non-governmental organization and the Dormaa West District Assembly to assist their infrastructural development.

Under the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGHSP), Renaddo Foundation received 119,776 dollars for the construction of a maternity clinic at Sakumono in the Tema West Sub-metro section of the Tema Metropolis in the Greater Accra Region.

The Dormaa West District Assembly received 113,228 dollars for the construction of a Community-Based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) Compound at Nkwantaso in the Dormaa West District in the Brong Ahafo Region

Both grants were awarded under the Japanese GGHSP, a scheme that seeks to directly assist grassroots level development projects.

Mr Naoto Nikai, Japanese Ambassador to Ghana said the Tema facility which would include a delivery ward, pre and post labour wards, nurses’ station, staff utilities and a nursery, was to support the promotion of safe and accessible maternal and child health for the people of the Sakumono Township and its environs.

The establishment of the clinic would therefore solve problems such as long waiting time and unnecessary fatalities experienced by inhabitants over the years and further reduce the high congestion in the only public facility being the Tema Polyclinic in the sub-metro, he said.

“As an industrial city, Tema Township faces daily challenges resulting from a sharp rise in population. There is a need for providing basic development structures to accommodate this growth and enhance the well-being of the people”.

He also explained that, Renaddo Foundation had embarked on several health-related initiatives in the area, and channeled immense efforts to ensure that the grant was made possible to alleviate the plight of the people in the area.

“To date the people of Nkwantaso face challenges in meeting their needs for health services due to the lack of a health care facility in their communities. The problem compounds when residents have to travel over 24 kilometers to the nearest health care facility to be treated of various llness and to have consultations”, he said.

Mr Nikai said the construction of the Nkwantaso CHPS Compound would therefore help in eliminating the access gaps and challenges faced by the over 12 targeted communities in the catchment area and benefit a total of about 2,608 people.

He said to date GGHSP which was introduces in Ghana in 1989, had supported a total of 250 projects countrywide, with the current provisions being the 60th in the health sector.

According to him, the projects were yet another opportunity under the “Japan Global Health Policy 2011-2015” and the Japan’s Strategy on Global Health Diplomacy to the global health needs for maternal and child health in developing countries, including Africa.

He said the Government of Japan would contribute to achieve maternal and child health-related Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5, by supporting community-based preventive and clinical care.

Ms Lily Naa Dodua Quacoopome, Executive Director of Renaddo Foundation thanked the Embassy and the people of Japan for the support, which would benefit about 22000 people in the area.

She said the implementation of the project was essential for the improvement of health of the community, since the health service of the Tema Health Directorate was currently challenged by the inadequate primary health care facilities in the area.

Mr Paul Donkor, District Chief Executive for the Dormaa West District Assembly, on his part gave an assurance that the Assembly would support in every capacity to ensure the early completion of the project.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Embassy and people of Japan for the support, which he said would strengthen the existing cordial relationship between the two countries.
