The Akyemmansa District Assembly in the Eastern region is sponsoring 300 disabled people to pursue courses in dressmaking, carpentry and masonry at the Akyemmansa Vocational Institute at Akyem Akokoaso.
The assembly is also taking steps to register them with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to enable them to access quality healthcare.
The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Tom Budu, who disclosed this at Akyem Ofoase, the district capital, said the gesture formed part of the economic empowerment being offered the handicapped people.
He said an American (NGO), the Light Outreach Foundation, had donated 400 wheelchairs to the handicapped people in the district.
Mr.Budu commended Mr. Dennis Attah Agyei, an executive member of the People with Disability Association in the district for helping in the acquisition of the wheelchairs.
He appealed to well to do individuals in the area to offer the necessary assistance to invalid people whenever they were in need.
The DCE warned that he would deal drastically with any able bodied man who would impregnate a disabled woman and refuse to take responsibility of the pregnancy or the child to be born.
