Bawjiase market women threaten to halt payment of market tolls if market is not rebuilt

Market women at Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya West District have threatened to halt payments of market tolls if the district assembly fails to rebuild their old and dilapidated market.

This was after a broken tree fell on some traders and buyers on Tuesday, June 6, during a heavy rainfall, injuring many of them.

About four people including a one and half year-old boy whose injuries were serious had been admitted at the Bawjiase Polyclinic, while four others were transferred to Swedru Polyclinic and Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.

Those with minor injuries were treated and discharged.

The old dilapidated market had some of the sheds' concrete pillars broken as well as leaking roofs.

The women lamented that despite the daily tolls collected by the assembly, the market had been left in a bad state and called on the assembly to take urgent steps to rebuild the market else they will halt paying the tolls from Friday, June 9.

Auntie Awo, a trader said the lack of expansion and provision of market sheds for traders had forced some of them to ply their trade under a huge tree planted many years ago.

She said prior to the incident, a branch of the tree fell and destroyed part of the roofings of the market.

According to her it would have been a serious disaster if many people sought shelter there.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Zonal Director at Bawjiase, Mr. Daniel Ofei,said the organisation came in to rescue the victims to the hospital and removed the fallen tree.
