The support is to empower them economically and improve upon their standards of living.

The Assembly also paid a total amount of Fifteen Thousand Ghana Cedis (¢15,000) as fees for eight (8) students with disabilities in the tertiary and second cycle institutions.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Assembly, Mr. Jonathan Teye Doku explained that government had thought it wise to economically empower persons with disabilities to ensure sustainable consumption instead of the previous tradition of giving cash grants which usually does not ensure a long term consumption of basic necessities. He explained that items were procured based on the request of each beneficiary adding that the donation is the second within this year.

Mr.Doku indicated that the items were solely funded by the government through the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF). “Due to this innovative initiative, the government had increased the Disability fund from 2% to 3% of the common fund to ensure the sustainability of the initiative’ he said.

Mrs. Augustina Nartey the District Social and Community Development officer also said, the shifting away from distributing cash grants to providing economically viable items to the PWDs has proven worthwhile based on their monitoring and evaluation reports. She therefore entreated beneficiaries to think thoroughly about their intended economic activity that would be fruitful, considering their disabilities and the community in which they find themselves before making their requests.

She mentioned that poor road networks, non-availability of vehicles for periodic monitoring and logistics to work with are some of the challenges that are crippling the successful administration of the department. She called on stakeholders to empower the department for quality service delivery.
