The festival, which was organised on the theme: “Preserving Our Cultural Heritage for sustainable development”, for the first time in its history witnessed the presence of the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, who came among his large entourage to add more colour to the event.

The Ngmayem festival has been held annually since 1944 to foster tribal unity.

Speaking at the event, Vice President of the republic, H.E. Mahamudu Bawumia applauded the Chiefs for holding forth on their heritage and tradition and further urged them to sustain the festival for the benefit of posterity, foster unity and create identity and awareness among the indigenes of the area.

He then charged the people to translate the rich culture of the Ngmayem festival into job creation and income generation through tourism to help impact positively on the socio-economic lives of the people of Krobo and Ghana at large.

He said festivals like Ngmayem are important to the Ghanaian society since they are occasions to thank the supreme gods for their guidance, protection as well as clean the ancestral stools and also perform other important rites.

On his part, Konor of Manya Klo, Nene Sakite II, charged the people of Krobo to lay a new foundation for their cultural values by harmonizing family life in order to ensure that children from the area grow loving one another and developing respect for the aged.

“Give them education in the proper line and the key to progress be given to them”, he said.

The chief further urged the people to eschew falsity and treat all with respect, adding that “if we defend the truth and what is right we shall have peace with ourselves.”

He cautioned stakeholders in the area to be circumspect to what they preach to their followers and also to help grow their prestigious culture by replacing good values whenever they condemn outdated ones.

Touching on some key developmental issues, Nene Sakite II lauded the NPP-government for its continuous effort to help bring development to the people of Krobo. He said the introduction of Free SHS, one district one factory, Nation Builders Corp among others is clear that the Akufo-Addo-led administration means business.

“The Free SHS for instance, has saved parents from paying about GHs 1,800 every term for their wards in SHS and is against this background that we the people of Krobo are so grateful to the President, Nene noted in a local dialect.”
