President cuts sod for construction of Dome-Kitase road

President Nana Akufo-Addo has cut sod for the construction ofDome-Kitase road project at a colourful durbar of Chiefs and people from the GaEast and Akuapim South Municipality on Friday, 29th July, 2022, at Comet,Kwabenya.

The 23 kilometre-road project, estimated to cost thirty-five million dollars ($35 million) and scheduled to be completed within twenty-four(24) months, is funded jointly the Government of Ghana and the Kuwaiti Fund and forms part of the President's "Year of Roads" agenda.

The project, being executed by M/S First Sky Construction Ltd,comprises a 16.3-km, 2-lane single carriageway with asphaltic concrete surfacing; a 2.85-km dual carriageway arterial, with ancillary lanes at bothsides for drop-off/pick-up with asphaltic concrete surfacing.

Also, 1-km, 2-lane single carriageway for Ashesi University with asphaltic concrete surfacing; a 1.45-km, 3-lane single carriageway arterial with ancillary lanes at both sides for drop-off/pick-up with asphaltic concrete surfacing, will be provided for this project. The provision of a 1.9 km, 2-lane single carriageway link road,with asphaltic concrete surfacing is included in this project scope.

Other components of the project include installation of road furniture with street lighting, signs, markings, and guard rails, traffic control systems, concrete curbs and pedestrian walkways, drainage structures,ducts for furniture utility line crossings, demolition of affected existing structures, and relocation of affected utility lines.

He intimated that his administration has achieved more in road infrastructure than any other government in the fourth republic. Enumerating the numerous road projects undertaken by his administration, President Akufo-Addo noted the crucial significance of the Dome-Kitase road as it "provides an alternate route to road users between Accra and Aburi.

The road also provides access to Ashesi University, one of our nation’s foremost Universities". "This road, which serves as a vital link between the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions, whose construction has been a subject of promises made by various political parties and successive governments, I am happy that it is under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is finally being undertaken", he emphasized.

The Kuwaiti Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Mohammed Hussain Alfailakawi, praised the development relationship between the two countries and hoped it would continue to bring more development to their citizens.

The Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, stated that the project comes with various components to meet international standards and would be completed on time.

Mr. Amoako-Atta assured the people that the construction of the Dome-Kitase road would be intensively supervised to ensure quality work is delivered. “I want to assure everybody, Chiefs, people of Greater Accra and Eastern Region, and all people present, that good work will be done to specification and it will be supervised with an eagle eye. Also, this project will be completed within the specified period of time.”

He disclosed that arrangements have been made for payment of compensations to project affected persons and appealed to all the stakeholders to support in the execution of the project.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, noted that the project is an other indication among many of the commitments of the President to improve livelihoods in the Region and Ghana as a whole. He appealed to the contractor to engage local artisans int he catchment area of the project to create a means of employment for them and pledged his full support to ensure its successful completion.

The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Hon. O. B. Amoah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Akuapim South, expressed delight for the project which he stated was long overdue.He said it will bring much relief to the people and also appealed to all the stakeholders to provide the needed cooperation and support to the contractor to ensure a successful completion.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Adjei; Chief Executive Officer of the Free Zones Authority, Ambassador Mike Oquaye; the Municipal Chief Executives for Ga East and Akuapim South, Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, and Frank Aidoo respectively were among the dignitaries present at the function.
