The 2018 close season was initially scheduled to have commenced from August 7 to September 4, 2018.

However, a release from MoFAD signed by the sector Minster, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye indicated that after further discussions with players in the fishing sector and fishing communities MoFAD has decided to defer the planed close season for all fleets except Tuna vessels to 2019.

The statement also indicated that while it recognizes the importance of close season to safeguarding the countries fish stock and also the livelihoods of fishers, it will “continue engaging the fishing industry and communities to make the necessary preparations towards an effective implementation next year.

The statement also assured the general public that moving forward “MoFAD will have zero tolerance for all forms of illegal fishing such as fishing with light, monofilament nets in marine waters, small mesh sizes, chemicals and explosives.
