The Assembly and the Social Welfare Department jointly paid school fees and medical bills for seventeen disabled persons earlier this year as their benefit of the fund.

According to the Social Welfare Department, a total number of One Hundred and Twenty Seven (127) disabled persons who are eligible to benefit from this years’ Disability fund were registered for the first phase.

Addressing the gathering, the District Chief Executive (DCE) Mr. Jonathan Teye Doku mentioned that government is concerned about the welfare of people with Disability and has therefore increased the disability fund from 2% to 3% of the District Assembly common fund.

He added that this is expected to raise the standard of living of the beneficiaries as well as reduce the incidence of begging for alms.

He added that the government is ensuring their sustainable livelihood by supplying them with items that can empower them economically to ensure the provision of their basic needs.

The DCE asserted that previously, people with disability were given cash grants which in essence did not sustain them economically. Therefore the items which were procured for them upon their request is a form of economic empowerment to lift them out of poverty.

He then assured them of governments’ continues commitment with regards to their social and economic well-being.

The District Director of Social Welfare Ms. Augustina Nartey entreated the beneficiaries to put the items to judicious use and be prudent with proceeds from their respective businesses so as to improve upon the quality of their standards of living.
