DCE Commissions Cashew Nursery Project at Lonkortor

The District Chief Executive of (DCE) Krachi Nchumuru, Mr Augustine Kwasi Appiah, yesterday commissioned the cashew seedlings project under the "planting for export and Rural Development” program.

This project is expected to officially begin immediately after the commissioning.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the DCE revealed that the district was one of the first five participating districts targeted for the implementation of the "planting for Export and Rural Development project in the Volta Region.

According to him, the project will focus on small-scale farmers to revive cashew production through the supply of high quality seedlings and transfer of complementary technologies.

Hon. Appiah reiterated his commitment to the project by initiating an award scheme to farmers especially, women who will be deeply involved in this project. He donated cartons of soap worth thousands of Ghana Cedis to the women in ‘Kwadofour’ for embracing the projects initiated by H. E Nana Addo and the NPP government.

He said, the seedlings when distributed and planted by farmers, will bring more jobs and money for the farmers since they are now going to be engaged in a produce that is of high demand.

The District Director of Agric took his turn to thank the President and the government for such a wonderful initiative and advised the farmers to embrace it wholeheartedly.

Nana Kwasi Omankomonte, the Omanhene of Banda traditional area who was also the special guest of honour, advised the farmers to seek permission from the Land owners since cashew is a permanent crop, to prevent future misadventures.

Present at the ceremony were Nana Okoegye Omanhene of Chinderi and his elders, Nana Anyorbosre and his elders, the presiding member Hon. Bright Sulah and some Assembly Members, and some farmers from the district.

Meanwhile, about 410 farmers made up of 400 men and 10 women have registered to participate in the project.

About 250 hectares of farm lands will be into cultivation in the district whereas over 53,560 healthy cashew seedlings are ready for distribution.
