MAMPONG: Reconsider how to put seeds into good use - MCE to farmers
The Mampong municipal chief executive Hon Thomas Appiah Kubi has appealed to farmers in the municipality to embrace the modern methods of farming that would lead to high yields.

He made the call at the 33rd municipal farmers day celebration held at Yonso a farming community in the Mampong municipality.

He commended farmers in the municipality and all other farmers across the length and breadth of the country for the nutritious food we enjoy from their selfless acts of service to us.

Touching on the theme of the programe planting for food and jobs, which was launched by the President Nana Akuffo Addo in the Brong Ahafo town of Goaso, the municipal chief executive announced that the municipality had received some fair share of government’s attention.

According to him, a total of Eight Hundred and Nineteen (819) bags of seeds and Seven Thousand and Fourty (7740) bags of fertilizers were supplied to the municipality for distribution to interested farmers under the planting for food and jobs programme.

Breaking the distribution down, he disclosed that 414 bags of maize seeds were received, out of which 349 had been distributed with a difference of 65 bags in store. 90 bags of rice seed were received and 87 of that distributed to farmers. 70 bags and 25 bags of tomato and pepper seeds respectively were received and all bags had been distributed to farmers.

Hon Appiah Kubi regretted that 200 sachet of onions were received but none had been distributed .He reminded farmers on the need to reconsider how to put seeds into good use. He stated that by doing so no seed would go waste and the municipality would stand a better chance of having sustained food security.

“I will therefore urge our local farmers to take advantage of this programme to increase food production to first ensure food security in the municipality before sending the residue to other parts of the country”, he noted.

The president’s representative commenting on challenges the municipality faced in the course of the year talked about the fall army worm invasion of farmlands. A total of 14277 acres of maize farms were affected with 1400 farmers involved.

He was pleased to announce that 11857 acres of land were sprayed leading to the recovery of 8980 acres of land.

Hon Appiah Kubi ended his speech by advising farmers, herdsmen,palm-wine tappers and game hunters to consult fire volunteer groups before deciding to set fire in farms or bush as the harmattan season approaches.

Hon David Yamful, assembly member for Adudwan electoral area who went into farming in 1980 was adjudged the best municipal best farmer for the year 2017. He had the following to his credit maize 250 acres, cassava 12 acres, cocoa 5 acres, cashew 8 acres, orange 4 acres, plantain 5 acres, yam 2 acres, cowpea 8 acres, oil palm 20 acres, pepper ½ acres, cocoyam 1 acre.

On animals he has cattle 29, sheep 80, goat 72, local fowl 200, guinea fowl 30, dove 200. On his farm machines, he has tractor 3, trawler 2, ripper 1, harrow 1, disc plough 4, sheller 1, hand planter 1, spraying machine 10, hand dug well 1, poly tank 750 liters, cutlass 10, hoe 10, earth chisel 4, mallacian knife 2, tarpaulin 2, motorbike 1, drums 5, kuffour gallons 200, wellington boot 10, apron 10 and one computer.

He was presented with a tricycle, 1 spraying machine, 1 Wellington boot, piece of cloth, 3 cutlass, insecticide sprays and farm items from chemico Ghana limited one of the sponsors of the farmers’ day celebration.

The short but colourful celebration was attended by Hon Thomas Appiah Kubi, Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Charles Oteng, Municipal Ccoordinating Director, heads of departments, assembly members, traditional leaders, religious leaders, general public, the media and security.
