Farming now attractive to the Youth
Farming has become a very attractive venture for the youth of today due to the implementation of government’s flagship programmes.

Notable among them include plating for food and jobs; planting for export and rural development; one district, one warehouse; and green house village programme. These are also complimented by easy access to modernized agricultural inputs which have been easily accessible to farmers all over the country which has birthed this new desire in the youth.

This was contained in the keynote address delivered by the Municipal Chief Executive for Ejisu, Beatrice Serwaa Derkyi at the 34th National Farmers’ Day celebration held on 7th December 2018 at Kwaso-Deduako.

The Programme was under the theme “Agriculture: moving Ghana beyond aid”.

It was a joint one; having Juaben Municipal which was carved out of the erstwhile Ejisu-Juaben Municipality joining forces with its mother Municipal, Ejisu, to celebrate the day.



The MCE’s for both Ejisu and Juaben spoke similarly about government’s plans to enhance agricultural production in the country and link the vision of the agriculture sector and that of the national agenda to develop Ghana to the nation beyond aid.

They stated that the national policy, planting for food and jobs and also Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), are to help facilitate agricultural growth and help develop the nation as a whole.

The Member of Marliament for Ejisu constituency and deputy minister for roads and highways, Hon. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi also made mention of government’s intension to construct the Odaho bridge between Ejisu and Onwe on early next year for easy accessibility. He also awarded all the female awardees with sewing machines and solo spraying machines for the best farmer award winners.

Mr. Patrick Akowuah, the Municipal Agriculture Director advised the farmers to do their farming activities without polluting the rivers and burning people’s farms: in order to prevent environmental hazards and use sophisticated methods in growing of crops and rearing of animals so as to maximize production with scarce resources.



Nana Nyamekye Yeboah II the chief of Deduako who chaired the function also said the celebration of farmers’ day is a building block for national development, he however said due to urbanization, land usage has become limited. Nana advised that backyard farming should be encouraged.

He also appealed to government to improve the roads for easy accessibility for carting food products from the farm gate to the market centres. He also thanked government for the implementation of the NABCO programme which has helped to develop the nation as a whole. For instance, the Feed Ghana module has boosted the food basket of the municipality.

The Ejisu Municipal best farmer, Mr. Paul Mensah took home a tricycle, wellington boots, keysoap and a half piece of GTP cloth among other souvenirs as his prize. The 2nd best farmer, Madam Martha Aniwaa took home a double decker fridge refrigerator, wellington boots, keysoap and a half piece of GTP cloths among other souvenirs as her prize. The Juaben municipal best farmer, Nana Abeyie of Abeyie farms, took home exact items as the Ejisu municipal best farmer.

There were dignities from across the length and breadth of the municipality who graced the occasion.
