Tain District Assembly holds first ordinary assembly meeting

Tain District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo region has held its first ordinary General Assembly meeting of the Third Session of the Assembly at the District Assembly Hall, Nsawkaw.

In delivering his welcome address, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Mr. Manu Isaac Kwaku commended the Assembly members for their tireless effort in helping the work of the Assembly. He also thanked Management for completing the Assembly Block and also providing permanent office accommodation for the presiding Member with a desk officer.

Mr. Manu recommends to management to organize capacity building for the Assembly Members to equip them with the Local Government Act.

He therefore urged the Assembly Members to contribute to the deliberations of the day as they consider the report of the various sub-committees to help develop the District.

Delivering her Sessional address, the District Chief Executive Madam Charity Akua Oforiwaa Dwommoh called on the Assembly Members to help intensify public education on environmental protection. According to her, the District is facing alarming rates of bush fires and illegal logging, a situation if not checked would definitely affect the sustainability of agriculture in the District which is the backbone of the people.

The DCE disclosed that, in 2017 , government supplied the District with Nine thousand, one hundred and ninety-one bags of fertilizer comprising of six thousand, three hundred and seventy three bags of NPK, one thousand, eight hundred and eighteen bags of urea and one thousand bags of sulphate of Ammonia under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

She added that under the District Chamber of Agriculture Commerce and Technology (DCACT) policy, with the aim of growing the economy through the promotion of agricultural growth and export, the District has selected cashew as the main cash crop for development under this policy. As a result, the District is expected to raise over 100,000 cashew seedlings to be distributed to farmers for free which they have started with about 20, 000 seedlings at the Assembly’s nursery.

Madam Charity Akua Oforiwaa Dwommoh said that availability of portable water to all citizens is the prime focus of government. As a result, the government of Ghana intends to drill fifteen boreholes in fifteen deprived communities in the District this year. She added that through her own initiatives with Rotary Club, the organization has agreed to provide the District with 20 boreholes which 10 have already been drilled in 10 communities in the District.
