AMA outlines 3 major ways to curb sanitation challenge in the capital
The Accra Metropolitan Accra (AMA) has identified three prong means through which the menace of waste can be addressed in order to make the capital city of Accra clean as promised by the President.

These according to the Chief Executive of the Assembly include the provision of infrastructure, enforcement of laws and ensuring attitudinal change of the citizenry.

The Mayor, Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah who gave the outline on UTV's Adekye Nsroma Mph me Mpu show Friday morning called for the involvement of all to make the city clean.

Infrastructure provision

He noted the current infrastructure requirement is not enough hence the Assembly and President Akufo Addo are ensuring lasting solutions through partnership with the private sector players led by Zoomlion, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies.

He indicated that over 40 mountains of refuse dumps that used to adore the capital have all been reduced to the nearest minimum whiles the disposal of fecal matter into the sea is now a thing of the past as a result of infrastructure that has been provided through collaboration with stakeholders.

Enforcement of existing regulations
The assembly he said is vigorously pursuing the enforcement of bye-laws of the assembly through the deployment of sanitation inspectors amidst the challenges.

He disclosed that the various sanitation courts are prosecuting offenders to serve as deterrent to others.

He said he remains resolute in ensuring that offenders are persecuted despite the several interventions to let go offenders.

The Accra Mayor disclosed that all assemblies the capital are joining their efforts together in what they called “Assemblies without boarders” in a collaboration against filth.

This he said will ensure no rubbish is left uncollected at all times.


Attitudinal Changes

Mr Sowah assured that the AMA is engaging the general public more through its innovative social media handles on the need to for all to safeguard sanitation in the city.

He said more will be done in the area of public awareness and education to ensure that the President’s vision of making Accra the cleanest on the continent is achieved by the year 2020 whiles urging the media to join the campaign.

The Mayor who believed behaviour change is key in realizing the dream declared 2019 as an action year whiles urging the general public to join the national vision.
