BIBIANI: DCE leads task force to clamp down on illegal miners

A desire for success and the will to see the right things being done compelled the District Chief Executive of the Bibiani- Anhwiaso-Bekwai Alfred Amoah to lead a joint task force of Police, BNI and some officials of the Assembly to clampdown on the illegal miners in the middle of the night.

The operation yielded results as it led to the arrest of two persons including a Chinese, and Ghanaian Nationals who were operating their heavy equipment in the middle of the night despite the ban on such illegal mining activities.

Though some of the culprits managed to escape, the DCE was happy that some arrests were made and their equipment including excavator seized, and promised that they will soon be arraigned before court.

Speaking to Journalists after the operation, Mr. Amoah stated that the president’s vision to protect the vegetation cover including water bodies, and other forest resources for which a task force “operation vanguard was formed must be taken seriously because the country has a lot to lose if the practice of unregulated small scale mining continues.

According to him, the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Assembly has a good relationship with the small scale miners in the district and they meet regularly to discuss about their activities to make sure they comply with laid down rules and regulations including the ban on their activities and expressed surprised that some people will go behind to still engage in the galamsey.

Government, he noted was drawing up road map to regulate activities of small scale miners and urged the people to wait until that is done and the ban lifted.

The DCE assured that the operation will continue until those still clandestinely engaging in the galamsey activities are brought to book.
