The Beauty Queens from Ghana, Burundi, Scotland, Nigeria and England planted the commemorative tree at the Kinbu gardens at the City Hall when they called on the Mayor of Accra as part of a two-week environmental tour to support their colleague, Miss Earth Ghana 2022, Miss Eunice Nkeyasen, to officially launch her foundation on 2nd June 2023.

Prior to the tree planting exercise, the Project Coordinator for ECO Earth Foundation, Tony M. White who gave a brief overview of the pageant and the Eunice Nkeyasen ECO Foundation (ENEF) said the pageant focused on the intelligence and desire to preserve the environment hence the tree planting exercise.

“Miss Earth beauty pageant is a pageant that caters for the environment. It is the second-largest pageant in the world after Miss World. We are not focused on the beauty of the ladies but on the intelligence and desire to preserve the environment,” he said.

He said the purpose of the visit was to officially introduce the beauty queens to the Mayor who happens to be the first female to occupy the position after 125 years and invite her to the launch of Miss Earth Ghana's foundation.

He said the ENEF led by Eunice Nkeyasen, winner of Miss Earth 2022 would focus on championing a good course on climate change, implementing a climate change agenda in the city of Accra as well as educating, empowering and sensitising the public, especially students on the need to preserve the environment for future use.

Welcoming the queens to the Accra City Hall, the Mayor of Accra said the Assembly as part of its climate Action Plan was expected to plant more trees in the city to promote walkability, improve air quality and mitigate the effects of climate change.

She assured that the AMA would support any agenda that preserves the environment and promote sustainability and encouraged stakeholders in the climate sector and residents in the metropolis to stay committed to planting more trees.

She lauded the continuous involvement of women in leadership positions citing the achievements of Eunice Nkeyasen and her team to embark on a climate action project to sustain the environment as commendable.

Eunice Nkeyasen expressed her appreciation to the Mayor for her commitment to climate mitigation. She was hopeful through public awareness and education the city would mitigate the effects of climate change.
