Tain District Assembly to raise 100,000 cashew seedlings

Tain District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo region is expected to raise about Hundred Thousand (100, 000) cashew seedlings to be distributed equitably to farmers in the District under the Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) programme.

Government have sets out plans to develop seven selected cash crops namely, cashew, coffee, oil palm, citrus, cotton, coconut and Shea into cash crops under this policy.

All MMDAs are expected to develop an agricultural project initiative, taking into consideration one or two of the identified cash crops with a budget which would support 10,000 to 20,000 farmers to cultivate an average of 10 acres of the crops within the next four years.

Tain district has selected cashew, as a result, the Assembly is expected to raise 100,000 cashew seedlings which they have started with 20,000 at the Assembly’s nursery.

This was disclosed during the District Chief Executive, Madam Charity Akua Oforiwaa Dwommoh interaction with cashew and mango farmers in the district at the District Assembly Hall, Nsawkaw.

The DCE said the PERD and the District Chamber of Agriculture Commerce and Technology (DCACT) programme will not only create job opportunities but to also encourage the youth into agriculture and to also ensure supply of raw materials to support government’s decentralized industrialization through the One District, One Factory initiative.

She added that government under the leadership of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo is very particular about agriculture due to its potentiality of transforming the livelihood of farmers, creating employment and rejuvenating the environment while creating sustainable raw materials for the sustenance of the One District, One Factory policy.
