Berekum West District Assembly Inaugurated at Jinini
The newly-created Berekum West District has been inaugurated at Jinijini. The new district, created in accordance with the 1992 Constitution and Local Governance Act, 2016, ACT 936, was carved out of the Berekum Municipal Assembly.

In his inaugural address, Mr Asomah-Cheremeh, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, noted that the Assemblies were focal areas for the government’s rural and urban agenda.

Mr Asomah-Cheremeh, entreated all stakeholders to be focused, committed and pursue the agenda of development with one purpose, while government spearheaded the efforts of accelerating and sustaining decentralization.

The Minister also urged the people to make the decentralization agenda work by minimizing agitations on the citing of district capitals, election of presiding members, appointment of government appointees, chief executives and the provision of critical facilities in parts of the communities.

Daasebere Dr. Amankona Diawuo II, Omanhene and President of Berekum Traditional Council, thanked the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for creating Berekum West District, adding that the inauguration marked a new transformation to the people of Jinijini and its environs.

Daasebre Diawuo urged the people to take opportunities that the new district will bring to them and appealed to the youth to stop ‘sakawa’ and take their education seriously in order to fully benefit from job opportunities which might accompany the creation of the new district.

He drew the attention the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister to infrastructure deficit that Berekum and the new district faced, particularly poor road network.

Nana Baffour Tutu Asare, Chief of Jinijini, noted that for the new district to develop, a major revenue mobilization drive should be the priority while revenue collectors should be honest to use the resources for the intended purpose. Nana Asare called for proper auditing, and accountability of duty bearers.

The 28 Assembly Members of the newly created Berekum West District Assembly, comprising 19 elected and 9 government appointees were sworn into office for the next four years by His Worship Narh Awah, District Magistrate for the Berekum District Court.

In another development, the Regional Minister, Mr. Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, inspected two abandoned police quarters, the construction of which was initiated by former President I.K Acheampong in 1972.

He promised discussing the projects and writing to the appropriate quarters for action to be taken.
