According to the GAMA Coordinator, people who were either staying around the downstream flood prone area around the Mallam Junction where a major drain had been constructed have been fully compensated and relocated.

He added that despite the compensation, as human nature some people might want to return to areas where they were relocated from.

“We have channel the storm water through the drain we have constructed, the volumes of water that would be coming out during heavy down pour would be a lot, so if you stay downstream where we have channel the water into the sea you would have problem”, he lamented.

Mr. George Aseidu further revealed that before the excess volumes of water goes into the sea, the excess water would spread around the low area causing flooding, hence the need for the Assembly to ensure that new people and already compensated people do not return to the areas.

And noted that when funding if available there would be some further works on the downstream drainage works on the Mallam Junction, same applies to the upstream.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) came to Mallam Junction when the rain set in heavily when other areas were flooded, but they had no job to do, this area did not witness the usual flooding, the GAMA Coordinator said.
