BEREKUM W: Assembly fails to elect PM
At an emergency meeting held at Jinijini, members of the Berekum West District Assembly have failed to elect a Presiding Member for the newly created District.

In a keenly contested elections, the two candidates, Mr Ansu Yaw Assembly Member for Anyimom and Mr Dominic Oppong Assembly Member for Asuokoraa East electoral area both failed to poll the required two-thirds of the total votes in the two rounds of the elections supervised by the Berekum Municipal Electoral Officer, Mr Eric Owusu.

According to the electoral process as stated in the District Assembly’s Standing Orders, the winner must obtained two-thirds of the votes cast which in this case was 18 votes. However, in the first round of the elections, Mr Ansu Yaw and Mr. Dominic Oppong had 15 and 11 respectively. The 2nd round of the elections saw both candidates polling 13 votes each.

The Regional Minister, Mr Kwaku Asomah Kyeremeh asked the elections to be postpone to a later date. In his earlier remarks, the Regional Minister urged the members to eschew partisan politics in their mandate to bring development to the newly created district. He said, the rationale behind the creation of new districts is to bring good governance to the door step of the people to strengthen governance at the local level.

Mr Peter Maala the District Coordinating Director urged the members to support staff of the assembly in the discharge of their duties to bring development to the people. He said, in every decision taken by the assembly, members should ensure that, they make development available to the people.

Present at the meeting were the Member of Parliament for Berekum West Constituency, Mr Kwaku Agyenim Boateng, the Municipal Chief Executive for Berekum, Mr. Kofi Adjei, the Security Services and the general public.
