SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE
The district has 390 kilometres of roads. The main road through the district is the Accra – Jasikan – Kadjebi road. About 75km of the roads are primary roads and these are supported by 50km of district distributors and 265km of feeder roads.

The primary route forms part of the distribution network leading to Yendi in the Northern Region and Kulungugu in the Upper East Region, through the Damongo Bridge and this is the same primary route which links the district to Accra. With the exception of the Damongo Bridge, the shortest route to Tamale from Accra is through this route, which makes Hohoe District very strategically placed.

Electricity is available in many communities in the district with a major sub-station of the Electricity Company of Ghana at Kpeve. A few towns not yet linked to the national grid are soon to be connected. Petroleum products are widely available in the district through the two fuel stations at Hohoe, the district capital.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is also distributed in cylinders at these fuel stations, while a gas filling station has been set up to provide LPG for households and industries in the district. Safe potable water is available throughout the district, which has benefited from the DANIDA-financed rural water supply and sanitation project since 1992.

In Hohoe itself, the urban water system is being rehabilitated and expanded to accommodate increasing demand. The district has telephone facilities at the post office in the district capital, with a number of pay-phone booths located at various points in the town. There are about 200 telephone lines at present. There are also six commercial communication centres in Hohoe, which provide telephone and facsimile services.

IDD facilities are also available. The formal education system, as of 1997, comprised 88 kindergartens, 129 primary schools, 80 junior secondary schools, 10 senior secondary schools, two training colleges, one technical institution and one special education school for the deaf.

The Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education has extended its activities to all parts of the district. There are currently 10 literacy zones with about 3,880 adult learners. There are two health centres, nine health posts, 13 maternal and child health institutions, a midwifery training school and a Government Hospital in the district.

The Headquarters of the West African Onchocerciasis Research Centre is also at Hohoe. The regional branch of the Bank of Ghana is sited at Hohoe and services all other banks in the region. There are four commercial banks in the district. These are Ghana Commercial Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, Barclays Bank and the First Ghana Building Society. There is also the Wate Rural Bank at Kpeve.
