The municipality has a population of 136,768 as at 2000 and is projected at 154,531 in the year 2005,with a growth rate of 2.6 %. Females are the dominant group and constitute 51.5% and males 48.5 % of the population. Koforidua is the municipal capital and the center of most administrative, commercial and political activities. The Minicipality was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I) 1426.
In this regard, most people in the rural set up in the municipality as well as other districts migrate to Koforidua to seek jobs. On the other hand, the proximity of the district to the national capital Accra also attracts a good number of people from the municipality especially the youth to the national capital in search of jobs, which are mostly non-existent.
The population of the municipality according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 183,727 with 88,687 males and 95,040 females.
