The Nandom was established as a district by Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2102 and is one of the eleven Districts that make up the Upper West Region. It lies in the north western corner of the Upper West Region in Ghana between Long. 2°25 W and 2°45W and Lat. 10°20 and 11°00. It is bounded to the East and South by the Lambussie and Jirapa Districts respectively and to the north and west by the Republic of Burkina Faso. The total area of the District is put at 567.6 square km. This constitutes about 3.1% of the Region’s total land area. The District is estimated to have 84 communities with 95% of the inhabitants in the rural areas. The population density is about 89 per square kilometer. It is the most densely populated District in the region. The District has its administrative capital at Nandom.
The population of the municipality according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 46,040 with 22,295 males and 23,745 females.
