Nabdam District was created as an Assembly by legislative Instrument (L.I. 2105) in 2012 with its Administrative capital as Nangodi. It was carved from Talensi-Nabdam and forms part of the new 46 districts and municipalities created in the year 2012 and were inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on the 28th June, 2012.
All the inaugurated and confirmed MMDAs established are operational with immediate effect hence bringing the total number of MMDAs to 216. The District shares boundaries with Bolgatanga Municipal to the West, Bongo Distrit to the North, to the South with the mother District Talensi, to the East with Bawku West. The District forms part of the thirteen (13) Municipalities and Districts in the Upper East.
The population of the municipality according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 33,826 with 16,871 males and 16,955 females.
