Gushiegu District was carved out of the then Eastern Dagomba district. It among the twenty six (26) districts in the Northern Region. It is located in the north-eastern part of the Northern Region. The administrative capital of the district is Gushiegu and is about 105 kilometers north-east of Tamale, the regional capital. The district shares boundaries with the East Mamprusi Districts and Bunkpurugu/yunyoo district to the north, Yendi municipal to the south, Saboba and Chereponi Districts respectively to the east and Karaga District to the west. The District was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I) 1783.
The population of the district according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 111,259 with 54,186 males and 57,073 females.
